Fyza Saleh ranks alongside the finest contemporary writers and performers around. Having known Injekta from the Phuturistix duo for some time it was only natural that she should be welcomed into the Phiture Lounge ‘family’’ once the label had been established; her incredible vocal range, irresistible harmonies and strong song writing fitting perfectly with the ethos of the label.
“It felt right and I’m very happy to be part of it. It’s a cool vibe with very talented musicians and like-minded individuals... we all feed off each other and create magic.”
Having grown up in Manchester, Florida and New York, Fyza’s style and musical vision has been shaped by the old school as much as the new. Citing the Motown era and in particular artists such as Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Hall & Oates and Roy Ayers as major influences, she also looks to the soulful strains of contemporary music emanating from Philly and Detroit to inspire her in a similar way. Her passion for the music of artists such as Dwele, India Irie, Bling 47 and Common reveal her true love for hip hop and soul music.
Whilst travelling back and forth between the UK and The US, inspired by the cultural energy of Manchester and New York, she wrote and recorded the tracks “Poetical Love” and “Rock Me Easy” (produced by Steve Williams and Andy Hickey), released by US indie label Rare Groove. Her cover of the classic “Ain’t No Sunshine”, penned by Bill Withers, surfaced soon after in the UK on Stonegroove Records. Alongside further co-writes and guest vocals for a number of MCs and producers (including Sheisty) Fyza went on to write and record with Birmingham’s Shenshen Productions.
Fyza’s no stranger to the live stage either; previous gig highlights include an appearance at the Jazz Café with Don E, Lynden David Hall and Loose Ends and a recent appearance at Mass in Brixton. At home in clubs as much as traditional live venues, US dates are planned for early 2006 and Fyza will no doubt feature as an integral member of the Phuture Lounge Live experience. A solo tour will follow in support of her first LP for the label, which she is currently writing and recording at the Lounge.
In the meantime, her broken soul bombs “Summer Groove” and “One Night” (both produced by Phuturistix) look set to appear on the first Phuture Lounge label compilation. With her LP to follow, 2006 looks set to be a big year for this talented and driven artist.
“There are a million songs in my head and a million melodies. I want to write for the best and to keep putting out good soul music as an artist....”
