the recording workshop west london |
|
Founded in 1989, The Recording Workshop is one of the longest established sound engineering & music technology schools in the UK. The ''Workshop'' incorporates a sound engineering school, music production college and working 48 track professional recording studio and has assisted over 2000 musicians, DJs, prospective sound engineers, producers and enthusiasts to develop their creative sound recording and music production skills, experience and contacts.
One of the unique features of the courses is that there are only around 5 people per class. The courses are designed for beginners and the more advanced alike. They are ideal for gaining practical experience and guidance at using modern professional music technology and sound recording equipment and music production techniques - for home or professional use and those thinking of setting up or building up their own studio.
This is also an excellent forum for meeting other musicians and enthusiasts. As a result of the course students often get together and start their own musical projects which they record at The Workshop. Some students even start writing their own music for the first time despite their apparent lack of musical knowledge.
The Workshop has catered to many professional DJ's, artists, A&R personel from Warner Music, BMG Publishing, Mother Records, Polygram, Jive Records, Nude Records, Island Records, Parlophone Records, Independiente & Decca Records etc...producers as well as novices all of whom have found it very useful.

overview |
|
Based in West London since 1989, THE RECORDING WORKSHOP has provided part time & full time certificated courses on all aspects of Music Technology, Music Production & Sound Engineering to over 1500 students. The various practical hands-on courses focus on digital & analogue multitrack recording, digital editing, MIDI, sequencer techniques, sound synthesis, microphone techniques including live drums, sampling, mixing, effects, production, etc...for beginners and the more experienced and with a maximum of 5 in each class. Advice on equipment purchasing and setting up studios is also provided.
These are practical hands-on courses where you learn by using the equipment. All the material is projected on to a 52 inch screen including the computer programs so that all 5 people can easily follow what is being demonstrated. The focus is on understanding rather than learning anything by heart. You are encouraged to experiment and develop your own styles and approach to production.
Taught by 2 experienced and very enthusiastic sound engineering teachers and musicians with over 28 years combined teaching experience and 60 years sound engineering experience. The Recording Workshop has deliberately kept itself small since it started nearly 16 years ago. The main emphasis is on keeping the teaching personal and accessable with the minimum techno-babble.
Past students have included many professional DJ's, artists, A&R personnel from Warner Music, BMG Publishing, Mother Records, Polygram, Jive Records, Nude Records, Island Records, Parlophone & EMI Records, Independiente & Decca Records etc...producers as well as novices all of whom have found it very useful. Students have had placements in studios such as Mayfair, Metropolis, Sphere Studios, The Dairy and the BBC..

TRW Full Time combined Sound Engineering course & Music Production Course (TRW Music Tech SE.)
The TRW Sound Engineering & Music Production full time course lasts 6 to 8 months and costs £4000 (5730 EUR, $7270). This is the equivalent of all the TRW audio & sound engineering courses and music technology & music production courses with additional practical periods amounting to 16 hours per week or more if you want.
One of the most important features is that there are only 4 to 5 people per course. Other schools, colleges or courses have somewhere between 10 and 30 people per course. "I have taught in further education colleges and it was a nightmare. There were about 25 students trying to get access to the mixing desk. The class was also held back by some students who were there because they could not think of anything better to do. They were not really interested which brought the whole class down..." says Jose Gross the founder of The Recording Workshop. "I like the personal approach. Small classes, lots of practice on the equipment. Exchange of ideas between people. I am still learning even now from my students because they have unprejudiced ideas about how to do things which I am always struggling with myself."
Another distinguishing feature of TRW is that it is located slap bang in the middle of one of the most densely populated recording studio areas in the world. There are something like 50 recording studios in about 3 blocks of buildings! A lot of them belong to world class acts. One is frequently seeing famous faces in the nearby cafe or just walking down the corridor in this building or down the street. This makes it ideal for making contacts and work opportunities.
The course is in 2 Parts:
The 1st part of the sound engineering & music technology full time course starts on session 1 of the Tuesday 3 hour afternoon music production 1st course, lasts 8 weeks and includes practical periods on Wednesdays 11:00 to 16:00, these sessions will include the synthesiser course and additional relevant lessons. Also there will be assisting periods in recording sessions on Thursdays and/or Fridays 11:00 to 17:00.
The 2nd part of the sound engineering & music technology course is made up of Monday classes 11:00 to 16:30, Tuesday classes 10:30 to 13:00 and a minimum of 2 x bookable 4 hour weekday practical sessions.
At the end of the course the work will be assessed for the TRW Music Technology & Sound Engineering Diploma. EU residents who meet the requirements will then be found placements in studios for work experience.
